What does tree trimming involve?
A trimmer climbs the tree or works from a lift and removes specific branches. Each cut is made just outside the branch collar, the slightly swollen ring where a limb joins the trunk, because cuts there seal over properly. Dead wood comes out first. Then the crew removes branches rubbing against each other and limbs growing over the roof, gutters, or driveway. We don't top trees. Chopping back the whole crown causes fast, weakly attached regrowth that breaks off more easily later.
When does a tree need trimming?
Trim when you see dead branches with no leaves in summer, limbs resting on the roof or scraping siding, or branches hanging low over the driveway. After a winter ice storm, look up for broken limbs caught in the canopy. Crews call these hangers, and they can drop without warning.
Most shade trees here do well with a trim every three to five years. Oaks are best trimmed between late fall and early spring, when the insects that spread oak diseases aren't active.
Why do branches die and break on local trees?
Shade trees in Woodbridge deal with a lot. Bacterial leaf scorch kills pin oak branches one section at a time. Spotted lanternflies drain sap from maples that are already struggling in compacted clay. Silver maples grow so quickly that their wood never gets dense, and their long limbs snap under ice. Trees that were never pruned when young often end up with tight V-shaped branch joints, where bark gets trapped between the stems and weakens the connection.
What affects the cost of tree trimming?
Trimming is priced by how much work each tree needs. A mature oak full of dead wood takes much longer than a young maple that needs a few low branches lifted. Height, the number of trees, backyard access, and how close limbs hang to the house all change the time on the job. Cleanup is included in every quote, and estimates are free.
Should you trim the tree or remove it?
Trimming makes sense when most of the tree is healthy and the trouble is limited to a handful of limbs. If more than half the crown is dead, or the trunk is rotting, pruning only postpones the problem. At that point removing the tree before it fails is usually cheaper and safer than paying to trim it twice.
What do people ask about tree trimming?
How much of a tree can be cut back at once?
A healthy tree should generally lose no more than about a quarter of its live branches in one season. Taking more than that stresses the tree and triggers weak sprouts. Dead wood doesn't count toward that limit.
Will trimming hurt my tree?
Proper cuts at the branch collar don't harm a tree, and removing dead or crossing limbs helps it. Damage comes from topping, flush cuts against the trunk, and climbing spikes, none of which belong on a tree you're keeping.
Can trees be trimmed in summer?
Yes, for most species. Dead and hazardous limbs can come out any time of year. Oaks are the main exception, since pruning them during the warm months can invite disease, so routine oak trimming is scheduled for the colder months.
What if a limb breaks before my appointment?
If a branch lands on the house, a car, or blocks the driveway, don't wait for the scheduled trim. Call (848) 233-3251 and ask for our storm response crew to come out sooner.
